In the FOCAL project, we will develop an application with Nobel Prize winners
In November 2024, the new European project FOCAL kicked-off in Darmstadt, Germany. Its goal is to develop an intelligent platform that combines geoinformation systems, satellite data, artificial intelligence, and high-performance computing to model climate change as accurately as possible.
Says Radovan Hilbert, Business Development Director, YMS:
“For the first time in history, YMS and partners, managed to win a project within the framework of the innovation support program, Horizon Europe. It is an incredible opportunity for us, but also a responsibility, to work in a team with such important and respected institutions as the Max Planck Institute or the Fraunhofer Society. We will participate in the creation of solutions that will help increase society’s resistance to climate change in built-up areas and in nature.“
Application for foresters and urban planners
the platform will help foresters to determine trees and locations suitable for future climate scenarios, and urban planners to model urban overheating and implement appropriate construction or vegetation measures.
While international groups prepare data and high-performance calculations, our task is to develop a modern and simple application that will make modeling results available to a wide range of users – from experts to municipalities or the public.
Sais Tomáš Piovarči, project manager, YMS:
„We will develop UX requirements for the application, design a user interface with several modules, program and test the prototype of the application so that it is as practical and transparent as possible for users.“
An innovation that will help everyone
Although there are many available climate data and services, they are mainly used by scientists. The FOCAL project will change that and put the platform in the hands of not only professional users, but also private companies that will continue to use it.
Says Radovan Sunega, director of research and innovation projects, YMS:
„FOCAL emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration and data openness and will create a working group to coordinate development and share knowledge. Special modules and tools will be opened up to developers and small and medium-sized enterprises for use in their own solutions, guaranteeing the transfer of research into practice.”
